Douglas, Nancy

nancy douglas Alaska Native Studies

From the very young age of 5 Nancy was fortunate to have been a student of 4 fine Sitka beading artists: Esther Littlefield, Charlotte Young, Maria Thiemeyer and her late mother Florence Eddy.  They were demanding teachers who taught her not only traditional beading techniques and traditional color choices but also the importance or expecting excellence from her work. When Nancy was in middle and high school she was fortunate to have taken Tlingit design and carving classes from William Brady. She has also taken Northwest coast carving, basketry, Raven’s tail weaving and design classes offered by the University of Alaska Southeast and the Sealaska Heritage Institute.  Nancy has dedicated her life to sharing the cultural knowledge the elders, Charlie Joseph and Austin Hammond, passed down to her.
