As someone who was involved in this legislation in MA, I fully support this effort. For the first time, schools will have to post on the state's department of education website where each school's "report card" lists state standardized testing and AYP, what opportunities there are for students to be involved in creative and innovative work. Parents interested in learning more about the success of a particular school will have much more information to make informed choices as to where to buy houses/rent apartments to send their children to the schools. This will be an extremely powerful incentive for schools and districts to maintain and improve creative work. I feel confident the commission will recognize the incredible role of sequential arts instruction in providing such opportunities to students.
The point to a lot of this is that there is little or no appetite to develop statewide testing in the arts; everyone feels the kids are grossly overtested as it is. This was a way for schools to be held accountable for the first time about the creative opportunities they are giving kids in addition to "teaching to the test" mentality of NCLB, AYP, etc. It will also not require much, if any, outlay in state funds in these tight economic times. I think it is a creative solution and the best one that anyone has come up with so far to address this issue. Those of us in the arts education community hope this will lead to greater support for arts education, not less.--Jonathan Rappaport, ArtslLearning

Thanks for sending the pictures Cheryl. It is such a bounty to host this Festival. A huge infusion of art, artist, and budding artist just brings a different kind of life to the school environment.- Therese Ashton
