With the help of 3 highly qualified teacher-leaders, participants will explore theoretical, cultural and performance arts and adaptive visual arts activities, skills and techniques.

During the Institute attendees will be immersed in both reflecting on and participating in multiple forms of the arts, considering classroom application and arts integration. Participants will be expected to submit a final project by June 1.  This will either be a short lesson plan or a personal plan of action (PPA).

This four-day AAEC Special Topics Arts Institute is an opportunity for educators, teaching artists, and para-professionals from all regions of Alaska to learn how to increase participation in the arts for students with disabilities through readings and discussions, hands-on arts activities and multi-media presentations.

During the AAEC ‘Arts are Exceptional’ Institute, participants will attend sessions with three highly-qualified teacher-leaders that are experts in their fields, including visual arts, music, movement and special education.  In order to understand current theory and strategies, attendees will explore ways to teach arts with accommodations for students with cognitive and physical disabilities and learn techniques for strengthening learning for all students through arts integration.  This Institute is intended for arts specialists, K-8 classroom teachers, and special education staff.  Participants will begin work on a lesson plan or a personal plan of action (PPA) that will be submitted as a final project on June 8th.

Multicultural education is an educational philosophy that focuses on recognizing diversity and uniqueness and the importance of incorporating techniques and materials that make the classroom a more aware and welcoming learning environment.  During this 5-day event, participants will use the arts as a venue through which to recognize and understand our own culture first and throughout the week consider and apply ways that we can transform classrooms in positive ways.

Each day will start with a multicultural education based plenary session and be followed by arts sessions that will reinforce concepts.  There will also be cultural sessions featuring local Bethel culture representatives.

Plan on arriving on Sunday as there will be a welcome dinner on Sunday, 29th.

Intended Audience:  Any educators
