Visual Arts, Arts Education Theory

Karen Stomberg is an artist and art educator who has lived in Alaska for 38 years. She has been one of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Elementary Art Specialists for more than twenty years, developing integrated art lessons and teaching in classrooms across the district. Karen is the current Art Coordinator and still happily shares floor space with kindergartners as they engage in art projects. She has taught in four Visual Arts Institutes in Fairbanks, has taught workshops and mentored teachers in many communities across Alaska and enjoys seeing her former University of Alaska students integrating the arts successfully in their own classrooms. Karen has been active in local, statewide and national arts education organizations. Her academic career began in Boston where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Art Education and became a K-12 certified art teacher after student teaching in a vibrant arts integrated Boston Public School. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and painting and a Masters of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Alaska. Karen is energized by keeping her own art making alive. Contact her at
