In 2003 the Lower Kuskokwim School District, in partnership with the AAEC, was awarded a PDAE grant that changed the face of arts education in Alaska. By the end of the grant period 106 teachers from 14 districts had participated in an intensive, residential two-week Basic Arts Institute, far exceeding the original goal. In follow-up evaluations teachers reported that at least 5,803 Alaskan students are now receiving more arts education, integrated routinely into their school experiences as a result of their participation in Basic Institutes.
What have we learned from the past participants regarding how arts education has impacted their classrooms?
- Every participant gained confidence to teach the arts; most of them valued learning research and rationales for why the arts are important for all students.
- More of these teachers now teach the arts on a daily basis than they did before the Institute.
- 73% of the participants rated the institute as Excellent four years after the event.
