Ryan Conarro

 

Ryan Conarro is delighted to be a part of the Alaska Arts Education Consortium’s teaching artist team. Ryan is a theatre actor, director, and educator living in Juneau. He’s the drama integration content coach for the Alaska Department of Education’s State System of Support. He also works with the Alaska State Council on the Arts Artists In Schools program, and he serves on the Council’s Teaching Artist Advisory Committee. He’s a teaching artist with the Lower Kuskokwim School District arts program, where, since 2006, he’s served 11 rural school sites by providing drama-based instruction to staff and students. He worked for 4 years as resident teaching artist at Glacier Valley Elementary in Juneau. In 2008, Ryan directed Glacier Valley School’s production of “Tides & the Tempest,” which toured to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as part of the school’s Creative Ticket Award for arts integration. The play was also presented by the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution.

Ryan has provided professional development in drama integration as a teacher leader in the AAEC’s summer Basic Arts Institutes; the MAT program at University of Alaska Southeast; and in a variety of conferences and workshops for teachers. His other work experience includes traveling in the Bering Strait region as Public Affairs Director for Nome’s KNOM radio in 2001-02. In Juneau, he designed and implemented the KTOO-JDHS Broadcast Journalism Program, a program that teaches radio news production skills to Juneau high school students, leading to student stories airing region-wide on KTOO’s Morning Edition news.

Ryan is a professional company member with Perseverance Theatre in Juneau. He’s a guest artist with New York’s Theatre Mitu, and he worked as a teaching and performing artist on national tour and Off-Broadway with New York’s Aquila Theatre Company in 2002-03. Ryan has also directed two Alaskan operas, including “Arctic Magic Flute,” his original adaptation of Mozart’s classic.  The project toured Alaska in 2007, including a presentation at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. Ryan earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre and English from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He also pursued graduate studies in arts-based education at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education.
