CHALLENGE 3 – #Culture!  #ARTS ED MONTH AK

Alaska Arts Education Month is here!  We’re celebrating throughout March with a different Creativity Challenge each week.  Get inspired by the week’s theme to explore music, dance, theater, cultural arts, media arts, and visual arts.  Share creations by you and your students with us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter by tagging #ArtsEdMonthAK + @akartsed to join the party!

Our first Creativity Challenge for March 13– March 19, 2022 is #Culture

Beautiful Indigenous Cultural Arts in Alaska identifies who people are and where they come from through their creativity, imagination, and originality. All art is based on history, skills, and survival. Culture is shared in multiple cultures throughout Alaska. Today we’re going to share a few ways to investigate culture through the arts. Some may work in your current educational setting and some may need to be saved for a different learning landscape. All can be adapted for different ages and abilities.

SING AND DANCE ALONG

Try a holiday song:  Learning Indigenous languages is a form of an ART!  In this 60-minute training with Suzzuk Mary Huntington from Unalakleet/Shishmaref, educators try a distance delivery lesson for elementary students.   This session features how language and movements can help to learn a language as well as arts.

“How can culture shape your life?”  Dr. Lorrie Heagy can bring you to a diverse culture of rap! In this 63-minute video, she engages participants to be involved in how to create hip hop music with students. Excellent way to get students interested in making music while connecting to their life experiences.

DRAW AND COLOR

Practice Form line Design: Form line design is a visual art from the communities of Southeast Alaska.  In this 73-minute session with artist Abel Ryan from Metlakatla and Juneau, you will go through a step by step creation of a design using line, curve, ovoids, and shading.  Materials needed are a pencil and colored pencils.  For students in upper elementary through high school.

We hope these ideas spark your creative thinking for this third week of Alaska Arts Education Month.  Whether you create something from this list or from your own inspiration, remember to showcase your work on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter with #ArtsEdMonthAK + @akartsed.  Visit again for a new Creativity Challenge and more ideas next week!
